Starbase 777 was host to the launch of Liberation Game: World Ender, a real-time, multi-tiered battle simulator being played within the Federation for the first time. With dedicated comms consoles interfaces, tactical displays, flight simulators mimicking shuttle interiors, and virtual reality rigs, the game was high-tech and fully immersive. It was ran by a group Orion technicians, lead by Mr Devinn Posk.
It was explained that the game would involve playing as rebels in Gorn territory trying to escape an oppressive government. The goal was to fight back against the Gorn who were trying to stop the rebels, save fellow citizens, liberate prisoners of war, and gain more allies. In both space and ground combat, players shot down their Gorn enemies.
It was noted that any attempts to find out more about the background of the game or its capabilities - how it was coded, spawning in NPCs - was subtly ignored. In game, NPCs themselves displayed strange behaviour including mentions of not being able to pause or leave the game. With audio of agonising screams and warfare left, right, and centre, things seemed far too realistic for a game that was supposed to be fun.
Upon confronting Devinn, it was revealed that the game was real. In a section of Gorn space, legitimate people had been enslaved and were fighting back. When players controlled a ship or a ground combat avatar they were controlling real constructs; remotely-controlled fighter-craft or weaponised holograms. The NPCs were genuine rebels in the real-life conflict and the Gorn their slavers.
Without a strong enough rebel force to fight back against the Gorn, the game had been developed by the Orions to bring in help from the outside. Every movement that players made was real, meaning that Starfleet officers and civilians alike - who had showed up to enjoy a battle simulation game - had just contributed to a real conflict. The game ended with Devinn being arrested and players being left to deal with the moral fallout of what they had been tricked into.
