This species is allied with the Federation. If your character applied to Starfleet Academy before 2410, they will have required a letter of recommendation from a Starfleet officer ranked Commander or higher. If this was after 2410 (with the establishment of the Khitomer Alliance,) they could apply without the letter. Alternatively, your character can be an exchange officer or a total transfer from their home faction's forces. If you go with the latter, you must include why they chose to swap to Starfleet.

For Roleplay 

Be aware that the Romulans practiced slavery of the Reman species up until 2387. It is likely that any Reman character will have a family history of being enslaved.

This is a telepathic species. No matter how powerful their telepathy is, they must follow the same laws as all telepathic species. Telepathy has to be controlled at all times for the sake of privacy, and using it on a person without consent is not allowed.

Timeline

Due to the complicated history of the Romulan people, there are quite a few things to keep in mind when creating Romulan characters.  Keep in mind this is just an outline of major events for reference. The STO Wiki also has a detailed article here!

The Romulan Star Empire

• Before 2154: The Romulans launch a unification movement and send undercover operatives to Vulcan to infiltrate the High Command

• 2156 - 2160: Earth Romulan War

• Before 2368: An underground Anti-Star Empire and pro-Vulcan unification movement is started by D'Tan with the help of Ambassador Spock

• 2373 - 2375: The Dominion War

• 2379: Shinzon's Coup and the entire Romulan senate is killed, Reman rights movement begins

• 2385: The Zhat Vash, a secret organization within the high ranks of the Tal Shiar, launch the Attack on Mars

• 2386: Remans negotiate for their freedom and are given the new home of Cretaris

• 2387: Hobus Supernova, wiping out Romulus and Remus

• Late 24th Century: The first full blooded Romulan (Elnor) is accepted into Starfleet Academy.

The Romulan Free State and Other Factions

• 2387: The Romulan neutral zone is dissolved and The Romulan Free State was established after the Supernova

  • Rator III is established as the homeworld for the Tal Shiar backed Free State

  • Virinat Colony is flooded with colonists who would later join D'Tan in what would be the Romulan Republic

  • Other Romulan colony worlds serve as safe havens for other refugees

  • Vulcan also welcomed Romulan refugees, especially those who believed in unification.

• Before 2390: The Free State encounters The Artifact and establishes the Borg Reclamation Project, working in tandem with the Federation at this time

• Late 24th Century: Romulan D'Tan works to establish the beginnings of a new government based out of the Romulan Flotilla

• 2409: Virinat Colony is invaded by Tal Shiar and their allied Elachi forces.

The Romulan Republic

• 2409: The Romulan Republic is legitimized. Dewa III is renamed New Romulus (Mol'Rihan) and is the new home of the Romulan Republic

• 2410: The Iconian War.
